i thought i knew a lot about british people in general, the reality of the politeness thing, the queueing, humour etc etc. well, now i have discovered something new.
last week i went to see take that (yes, spare your laughter, cos it was absolutely fucking amazing, by far the best show i have ever seen). we had golden circle tickets, which meant you were so close to the stage you could nearly touch it. we found a space in the first few rows and prepared for fighting our way to the very front. but to our surprise nothing like that happened. while the supporting acts were on everybody was just standing on their spot. i couldnt believe it. even when tt came on nobody moved, there was cheering, yes, but everybody stood at exactly the same spot. we were dumbfounded. earlier on we were laughing at people who turned up in flipflops and some girls were standing around barefeet, something nobody in germany would ever think of doing at an open air concert with 60.000 people all trying to run to the front. it was weird, it was polite. people were actually discussing their positions and at some point pointed out that me and my friend had moved half a meter and as a result of that she couldnt see anymore. we actually 'swapped' places with her. another girl asked my friend to stop jumping about, cos she couldnt see anything and would very much like to take a picture. hello?? it's a concert. you are there to jump, dance and enjoy yourself. honestly i have never seen anything like it. to be fair i was quite glad to get home without multiple bruises spread across my body, but i felt a bit like a naughty child whenever i shifted from one leg to the other. somehow it looked like i didnt know the rules. there were no floor markings, but i swear most people did not move an inch from their original position. i always thought that we germans were bad with the towel thing on holiday, but this...i still cant get over it. bizarre.
anyway, the concert was superb and i would recommend it to anyone, whether you like the music or not. it was great and very cleverly done.
oh, and on the home front: all of the annoying housemates have now left (woohooooooo). and i am going to move middle of july as well. the new house is great, my new room lovely and my housemates (which i have just met) all seem very nice, sensible and intelligent. i hope it stays that way.
